Allison's birthday

>> Monday, February 22, 2010

Remember when I mentioned that I had two parties to go to the weekend of Valentine's Day? One of those was to go to my friend Allison's 30th birthday. She just says that it's her annual 21st birthday celebration. Jason wasn't feeling well that night, so I went solo. We met at Luna to see Ruben V play. He's an awesome Texas blues guitarist.....amazing. You have to see him in person if you live in the area. Anyway, here's a pic of the birthday girl and I:

I look so weird in that picture! What is wrong with me??? I found it funny that we both grew our hair out at the same time! I also finally got to meet Allison's new boyfriend Markus (left) and her brother Todd and sister-in-law Allison. The brother and sister-in-law live in another state so I've heard the names for years.

I had a great time meeting her family and boyfriend and loved hearing Ruben V for the hundredth time!
The next day, on Saturday, Jason and I went to my cousin's 25th birthday party. It was a crawfish boil. I enjoy seafood, but I've never tried crawfish. They just look creepy. The birthday girl, Becca, made me try a piece and it was okay. It was kind of spongy like crab, but luckily it was spicy from the sauce. No, I didn't such the head. Gross! I only got one picture of the birthday girl and birthday boy (Brian - never met him before):

You gotta love that Texas-shaped cake! It even had little margarita candles on it! Even though I hadn't planned on staying a really long time, Jason and I were there until most people had left. We got a great visit in with Becca and her husband, TJ. Thanks for inviting us guys!

New Year's Eve Celebration

>> Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Jason & I were invited to a "Classy New Year's Eve" party at a friend's house. Now if you know some of my friends, then you know that classy could either be:

1. Classy
or
2. Klassy

On New Year's eve, Jason & I both weren't feeling well. The mountain cedar pollen had made itself known in San Antonio and my sinuses were (and still are) well aware. They couldn't stop crying and I was tired of mopping up their tears. Jason just had a headache, but I think it was out of sympathy. Somehow we unstuck ourselves from the chairs and turned off the tv long enough to get dressed. At this point, it's cold and I'm not about to put on a dress and freeze my arse off all night. Plus, I already explained the dilemma above.

So we donned our best jeans, trying to make ourselves look somewhat dressed up and presentable. We arrived at the party a typical hour late because we're cool like that and no one ever expects the M family to be on time. Much to my surprise, it was indeed a CLASSY New Year's party and my lovely husband and I were far outclassed. We became the klassy folks of the party. Well, someone had to take that role. We made klassy look good!

Soon after arriving, Jason downed a few beers. He was a man with a mission and that mission was to kiss the toilet seat later. I am happy to report that his lips stayed toilet seat free, but we did have a good scare. In case you were wondering, no I did not drink with such fortitude. Instead, I had two small 29 degree beers early on and some champagne at midnight. This picture was taken after Jason had about 3 beers:

I have no idea what in the heck he was doing. Because he has a pumpkin head, the New Year's hat didn't fit him at all. He found a great way to supplement it. Poor Mendy just didn't even know what happened here.

Here's a picture of our host, Haby. See, I told you it was CLASSY. He brought out the tux for the occasion. I'm pretty sure he remembers nothing of this moment.

Here's a few more party goers: Deseere, Mendy & Paul.

Somehow through my husband's rip-roaring debacle we managed to take a decent picture together.

Here's Mendy (again with the hat! Ha!), Jason, myself and Kristi:

The real story was of the second Jason. We shall call him Buzz for several reasons, none of which shall be listed here. At midnight, he busted open his bottle of champagne and proceeded to drink from it the klassy way. (If you'll notice, he wore jeans, too. I told you some of us were klassy people.)

Shortly after this, he decided that the champagne was only good for picture-taking and would be way more fun to spray on the lawn!

But the story's not over yet. So that a perfectly good bottle wouldn't be wasted, he filled that bottle up with margaritas! The King of Klassiness!

A little later in the night, this picture was taken. If you look closely, you'll see the Ginger trying to hide like a ninja. This is me, Paul, Nik, the ninja Jenn & another Stephanie. People, there were three freaking Stephanies at the party. Seriously, WTH?

The ninja felt the need to prove her worth so she challenged her fellow Ginger to a headbutting contest!

The night went on until I worried that Jason might keel over at any moment spurring someone to yell "Timber!" in the distance. I may exaggerate how much he drank, but I kid you not about the tree part. At 6'8", you do not want to see him fall. I would've had to have left him there because there's no dragging any man around of that size. We took the backroads home and finally got in bed for the night.

The next morning, after sleeping very late, I made my dear husband make me pancakes. I figured that was a good enough payment for driving him home. However, my dreams of morning mimosas were turned down. I kept telling Jason, "hair of the dog! Hair of the dog!" but it didn't work. Oh well. I guess I can save that champagne bottle for this weekend a special occasion. Hope everyone else's celebration was just as fun!

Cookie Exchange

>> Tuesday, December 22, 2009

This past weekend, Jason & I headed out to College Station to visit our friends Sylvia and Jake. We were also going to Sylvia's 1st Annual Gig 'Em Cookie Exchange. We made Jason & Jake eat cookies and vote. Guess who's husband didn't vote for her cookies? Yeah, mine. Some girls might be disappointed but I'm not. He likes chewy cookies and I could care less whether mine are chewy or not. I made my great grandmother's pomanders (basically rum balls without the rum). I realize that I may be the only one who loves these, but they're more of a sentimental thing for me.

I also made Lime Coolers, which are sugar cookies with lime zest inside and a lime frosting on the outside. Yum. I had tried these at another party (I forgot to take pictures) and I liked them so I decided to try them out again. There's always so many chocolate cookies at these parties so I wanted to break it up some.

We also had Butterballs (kind of like almond flavored pecan sandies):

Jelly cookies:

Chocolate chip cookies:

Oreo truffle balls:

Super Chunky Christmas Cookies and Peppermint Swirl Cookies:

Pecan Praline Cookies:

While we noshed on cookies, we toasted our sugar highs with some AMAZING apple cider and eggnog:

I don't even like eggnog and I thought it was really good. But that cider.....that cider was deeee-lish. It was a Paula Deen recipe. I joked that it was her only recipe that didn't include butter or bacon. Sylvia told me the recipe actually was called Hot Buttered Apple Cider because you're supposed to put a pat of butter into your glass of hot cider. Gross. Glad we skipped that part. At least we know that P. Deen is consistent!

Here's a shot of us all. From left to right: Myself, looking a little too casual, Kim, Dawn with baby Jacob, Sylvia, our hostess, and Ashley.

After counting the votes, Kim's Oreo Truffle Balls won! Yes, Jason voted for them.

Her prize was a couple spatulas and some copper cookie cutters.

Before the night was over, I couldn't resist getting in some quality baby time. Be still, my ovaries.

After some more oohing and aahing over baby Jake, stuffing our faces with a dozen or so cookies and knocking back a few more glasses of cider, the party ended. I came home with lots of cookies to eat.

And I'm not sharing! Ha!

Matthew & Jenn's Wedding

>> Wednesday, November 18, 2009

On Saturday, Matthew & Jenn (aka Melvis & Laugh) finally tied the knot at their wedding, or as they called it, their "Crazy happy fun time"! I didn't get very good wedding photos; it was just too dark in the church for my simple point and shoot camera. Here's the two that are decent.

Jenn coming down the aisle with her dad:

And I caught the two newlyweds laughing their way back out of the church!

The reception had a Dios de Los Muertos type theme to it. There was lots of color and Mexican touches. The tables were decorated so cute!

There were little flags for placemats with the silverware wrapped up in different colored napkins and tied with a flower. They used paper Fiesta flowers for centerpieces accented with a few candles and the cutest, most unique favors I have ever seen:

Skull cookies! Anything edible is great in my book, but when it's cute AND tastes good? Perfect!

I didn't get a picture of the food because......well......I was hungry. But it was good! They served bar-b-qued chicken & brisket made by a friend.

The wedding cake was unique as well, with the bride and groom opting for a green cake! This one was spice flavored. I can't say I tried it and you'll see why in a second.

One of the groom's cakes was a Patriot cake since that is his favorite team.

And the last cake is why I didn't try anything else. Take a look at this baby.

Okay, I know what you're thinking. It's not nearly as cool as the wedding cake. But I must educate y'all. That's right, I said y'all. This cake was GOOD. It was pure chocolatey heaven on my plate. I would've eaten a couple pieces, but I didn't want anyone giving me the stink eye for taking more than my share!

Just like the good little papparazzi that I am, I snapped a pic of Matthew & Jenn showing their true colors. (And weirdness)

And finally, before the night ended, we had to get a picture of Jenn with all of her Sister Goddesses!

Congrats to Melvis & Jenn! Wish you both a lifetime of happiness together!

Jenn's Bachelorette Party

This past Thursday was my friend Jenns's (aka Laugh) bachelorette party. We had a Moulin Rouge themed party (think can can outfits) and the costumes did not disappoint! Here I am about to leave the house:

We had dinner at my friend Deseere's house beforehand and then held a "pleasure party" for the bachelorette. I'll spare those pictures. ;)

However, I will show you the group photo before we left to go downtown:

Yeah, we were can-can-erific! We headed downtown to go to Howl at the Moon. This was an old stomping ground of mine back in the day, so I knew we were in for a good time! Here's Laugh and I before she got too "happy":

Check out those feathers! Laugh totally rocked the peacock feathers that night! And you better believe that we made her work that night. We got her up on stage to be mocked by the piano players.

After making a scene, Laugh returned to the tables where our hot waiter, Josh, asked us if we needed anything else.

We needed his shirt.

Oh yes, you can buy the shirt right off his back. Literally. And Josh did not disappoint either. He is currently a fitness model! Lucky us!! Ha ha!

After a million cameras flashed on Josh, he - unfortunately! - reclothed himself in a new shirt and we moved on to the stage. Yup, all of us.

Look carefully at the picture now. Can you find me right next to the flash in the mirror. Do you also see the mustard-shirt lady hiking her leg across me and my companions? Now look below:

See mustard-shirt talking to me? She informed me that Amber (the tall girl to the right) and I were supposed to PICK HER UP when she did that.

I kid you not.

What I should have done was boot her off the stage, but I just let her walk away. I'm a sissy like that!

We had a great time until about 12:30 when Laugh decided that she was too drunk to go on. We headed back to Deseere's where she made mac and cheese. There is always mac and cheese at this house! Yum!! Just before I left, I made Jenn take one last picture:

And I think that picture just about sums things up! Ha ha!

Sylvia's 30th birthday

>> Tuesday, August 25, 2009

I'm way behind on posts, I know. Sue me.

A couple weekends ago, I went to celebrate my friend Sylvia's 30th birthday. The party was held at her in-law's house in Canyon Lake. At my party in January, Sylvia was nice enough to give me a sash that said "30 and Thrilling!" However, her sister gave me a picture frame that everyone could sign and Sylvia made a misprint. Instead of writing "30 & Thrilling", she wrote "30 and Thriving." I mean, it's not like I'm almost dead. Sheesh.

So, I had to return the favor:

And yes, I made her wear it! I could do a post on how I made the t-shirt, but I think we all know how iron-ons work.

The most fun part of the party was the adult pinata. Here's Syl taking a whack at it (and totally cheating!):

Here's me taking a shot!

The pinata had mini wine and liquor bottles, air fresheners, liquor-filled candy and scratch off tickets! Miles loved picking up the contents!

We then got a group shot with almost everyone. It was impossible to get people to face the same camera! Can you find Jason & I? Jason blends in REALLY well here. Ha ha!

Then we went inside for cake! Look at that adorable cake!!

Afterward, Syl opened presents and we all gabbed til late at night. It was so good to just kick back and relax with friends and just catch up! Here's Syl & I...her with her "30 & Thriving" t-shirt and her "30 & Flirty" sash:

I came home with an air freshener, $20 in winning scratch off tickets and booze. Now that's what I call a successful night! Happy birthday Sylvia!!
